Alitalia flies Pope Francis to Cuba and Mexico


Rome, February 11, 2016 – Pope Francis takes off from Italy tomorrow for Cuba and Mexico, the 152nd pastoral flight with Alitalia.

Alitalia is the Vatican’s chosen airline for apostolic travel for the Pontiff and Pope Francis will be me greeted at Fiumicino airport by the airline’s Chairman, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.

Flight AZ4000 will take off at 7.45 am and land at 2pm local time in Havana, the Cuban capital.

The flight will then continue to Mexico taking off from the Cuban capital at 5.30pm local time and landing at Mexico City 7.30pm.

The papal flight will be operated by a long haul Airbus A330-200 aircraft with a capacity of 250 seats, a range of 11,000 km and a cruising speed of 900 km/h.

The supervisor of the flights will be Captain Paolo La Cava, 46 years old, from Milan. Sharing cockpit duties will be Fausto Minelli, 54 years old, from Perugia, Massimiliano Marselli, 56 years old, from Rome, Pierpaolo Caraccio, 45 years old, from Rome; Alessandro Zordan, 46 years old, from Monza and Flavio De Brasi, 46 years old.
