Alitalia is the official carrier of Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi, the official tour operator of the Vatican, with the aim to promote the development of incoming religious tourism to Rome, during the extraordinary Jubilee which will begin on December 8.
According to forecasts, 20 million Roman Catholic pilgrims and tourists will visit Rome in the next 12 months from around the world.
Alitalia will offer special discounts for many ORP pilgrims. An 18 per cent discount on the price of an "Omnia Card" - a set of benefits found on the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi website - will be available for those who have purchased a ticket on alitalia.com for a flight from abroad to Rome.
Also, a 10 per cent discount on the purchase of any flight operated by Alitalia or its partners from abroad to Rome, will be available for those who have purchased the "Omnia Card" on the ORP website.
The agreement is effective for flights on the entire network of more than 1,000 destinations offered by Alitalia and its partners.
Giancarlo Schisano, Chief Operating Officer, Alitalia, said: “Following on from our official airline status at EXPO Milano 2015 we continue to support major events in Italy which contribute positively to the growth of inbound tourism.
“This commitment is underpinned by Alitalia’s aim to serve new long-haul destinations with direct non-stop flights and by June next year we will start two new routes to Rome from Mexico City and Santiago”.
